Intaglio Printmaking
By Mychael Barratt

I was commissioned by the publishers A & C Black to write a
book
about Intaglio Printmaking for their series of Printmaking Handbooks.
Intaglio is the general name for all printmaking techniques where
a
print is made from an image that has been incised into a metal plate.
This covers everything from etching and aquatint to drypoint,
engraving and mezzotint. I wanted to make certain that I was familiar
with everything I would be covering so I interviewed experts and
then
tried my hand at every one of the techniques. One of the results
of this
experimentation was the large-scale print O for a muse of fire.
It was
a Shakespearean A-Z with as wide a range as possible of plate- making
methods. My editor, Susan James (nee Kelly) rather sweetly referred
to
it as ‘an intaglio quilt’.
